Tube Lines

Tube Lines are the arteries of London. The lines criss cross the city and allow travellers to move quickly from one Tube Station to another.

The very first tube line opened in 1855, this underground railway between Paddington Station and Farringdon Street via King’s Cross was called the Metropolitan Railway. Later to become the Metropolitan Line.

Today London has 11 lines which are divided into two classes: the subsurface routes and the deep-tube routes. The Circle, District, Hammersmith & City, and Metropolitan lines make up the subsurface class. The Bakerloo, Central, Jubilee, Northern, Piccadilly, Victoria and Waterloo & City lines are the deep-tube routes. There was a twelfth line, a fifth subsurface route, the East London line.

Each Tube Line is identified by it’s own unique colour on the Tube Map. Below you can see how the lines make up the London Underground Network.
