Tickets & Pricing

The London Tube is great value for money, if you work the system to your advantage. Firstly, what you must know is that the tube system is divided into a series of six main travel zones in a series of concentric circles ranging out from the center of London (which is Zone 1). A simple journey between two stations is priced based on how many zones you will travel through. The more zones you pass through, the higher the cost.

The zones are outlined in the map below. Shaded areas show number such as 1, 2, 3 etc, these are the price zones.

If you plan to do some serious sightseeing or have a number of things to do during the day then we recommend getting a travel-card. You can by them to cover a specific number of zones so if you know that you’re only going to be in the City Center then a Zone 1 & 2 travelcard will allow you unlimited tube travel for the day within those specific zones.

It does offer the best fare and also means that you avoid queuing. Just make sure that you have a valid ticket because if you’re caught on the Tube without one you’re liable for an on-the-spot fine.

Another pricing tip is that if you buy a travelcard for the day before peak time in the morning, it will cost you more – approx. £8. If you buy your travelcard after peak time then it will only cost you £6.60 – for Zones 1 & 2, which is where the majority of the tourist attractions are located.
